Trubarjeva Street, Ljubljana

Transforming a street from a transit walkway to a final destination.

Despite its lively past, Trubarjeva has changed into a mere transit street for the residents: people rush to or from the city centre, and rarely stop there. With the owners of small shops located there, we wanted to slow down the pace on Trubarjeva to attract new visitors and draw attention to the offers of the local shops.

Our first goal was to emphasise the pleasant atmosphere and the unique character of this street. Benches, rubbish bins, bicycle stands, and interesting street lighting were some of the interventions that we set up with the help of the Municipality of Ljubljana and Ljubljana Tourism. In cooperation with the Institute for Sustainable Development, based at Trubarjeva street, the Biodar Association and local organic food stores, we also organized the Trubarjeva Green Market, which took place once a week from autumn 2012 to winter 2013. The afternoon working hours made fresh produce accessible to those who could not go to Ljubljana’s main market during the day.
