The former kindergarten building in Bohinjska Bistrica lost its original function when the children relocated to new premises. For the Municipality of Bohinj, we carried out a spatial assessment to evaluate the feasibility of converting the building into a library, municipal rental housing, or an intergenerational centre.

Given that two of the proposed uses are public and therefore involve dynamic, community-oriented spaces, we also conducted an analysis of the availability of (rentable) spaces for cultural, sports, and community activities in Bohinjska Bistrica. The analysis showed that demand for halls, rooms, and other rentable spaces exceeds supply. All municipal spaces available for rent were fully occupied in the afternoons, when amateur, cultural, and sports associations typically need them.

At the same time, the vacant kindergarten building remained functional, presenting an excellent opportunity for the municipality to immediately offer new spaces to the local community. As long-term renovation and formal change of land-use require time, we proposed that the municipality initiate a temporary use programme in the former kindergarten. We developed the operational concept for the spaces and created the new brand, Bohinj House. We also supported the municipality in preparing an open call for users during the temporary use phase and in carrying out a minimal renovation of the building.
