The playground on Škapinova Street lies on a spacious meadow under oak canopies, between Celje's ring road, one of the main roads into the city, and a line of apartment blocks. The space feels open, while the slope of the terrain shields it from the traffic. It was a popular playground and a well-used walking route long before the renovation.

Through observation on site and conversations with local residents, we looked at how different age groups use the space. It turned out to be well visited by all generations already, and people proved strongly attached to the existing wooden hut in the northern part of the site, to the spacious green areas and to the depth of the tree canopies. The plan is therefore built on intervening in the green landscape as little as possible, repairing what is already there and adding new uses.

We planned the renovation as an upgrade to the existing playground, adding new uses and turning it into a multi-purpose sports and green area.

New elements are concentrated where most was already happening. We divided the space into smaller, connected areas for different ages: the sandpit, water play element and playhouse for the youngest are enclosed by a long bench for parents; next to the existing hut, older children find open play equipment and swings; and activities for teenagers and adults, such as table tennis and outdoor fitness equipment, form a series of smaller spaces across the wider green area around the playground.

In the more secluded southern part we added a small paved area for quieter company, answering teenagers' need for somewhere to withdraw to in public space. We kept the existing mound, since it is an important place for winter activities and at the same time acts as a natural barrier between the road and the playground. 

The renovation creates a balanced space for all generations while preserving the identity and the landscape qualities of the place. By involving the community and thoughtful interventions, we strengthen the space as an important centre of the neighbourhood.
